Crossfade 3 Wireless is the newer V-MODA generation, but the useful differences are specific: longer battery life, USB-C charging, aptX HD, app EQ and multipoint support. Crossfade 2 Wireless remains relevant for owners or discounted purchases, especially in Codex form.
Quick answer: Crossfade 3 Wireless is the more current all-around choice if the price is reasonable. Crossfade 2 Wireless Codex can still make sense when you already own it or find a strong discount, but it has shorter battery life and older charging hardware.

| Feature | Crossfade 2 Wireless Codex | Crossfade 3 Wireless |
|---|---|---|
| Battery | Up to 14 hours | Up to 30 hours |
| Wireless codecs | SBC, AAC, aptX | SBC, AAC, aptX HD |

| Wired mode | 3.5 mm | 3.5 mm; wired Hi-Res certification |
Crossfade 3 Makes the Biggest Practical Upgrade in Battery and USB-C
V-MODA's Crossfade 3 launch materials list up to 30 hours per charge, more than twice the previous generation, plus USB-C charging. Crossfade 2 Wireless Codex is commonly specified at up to 14 hours and uses Micro-USB.
Codec Support Is Different
Roland/V-MODA documents Crossfade 3 with Qualcomm aptX HD, AAC and SBC. Roland support says the Crossfade 2 Wireless Codex edition adds AAC and aptX compared with the original Crossfade 2 Wireless. That means “Crossfade 2” needs the exact variant name before comparing codecs.
Neither Model Is an ANC Headphone
These are closed-back over-ear headphones that rely on passive isolation rather than active noise cancellation. If ANC is a requirement, neither Crossfade 2 Wireless nor Crossfade 3 Wireless should be selected on the assumption that sealed earcups provide ANC.
Wired Use Remains Part of the Design
Both generations can be used with a 3.5 mm cable. Crossfade 3's launch materials specify a 5–40,000 Hz wired response and Japan Audio Society Hi-Res Audio certification in wired mode. Those wired specifications should not be presented as the Bluetooth response.

Crossfade 2 vs Crossfade 3 FAQ
Does Crossfade 3 Wireless have ANC?
No. It is a closed-back wireless headphone without active noise cancellation. Isolation comes from the earcup and cushion design.
Does every Crossfade 2 Wireless support aptX?
No. Roland notes that the Codex Edition adds AAC and aptX, while the original XFBT2 does not provide those same codec options.
Is Crossfade 3 a mandatory upgrade?
No. Existing Crossfade 2 owners may not need to replace a working headset. The clearest upgrades are battery life, USB-C, codec support, multipoint and app EQ.
